Although rated higher than Korea, the Thai women’s team could not score any points. The Thai women’s volleyball team went through 4 matches at the 2024 Nations League (VNL 2024) with 2 words of disappointment. It was not surprising that captain Thatdao Nuekjang and his teammates lost to the US (1-3), Serbia (0-3), Canada (1-3), because these were all opponents with higher rankings and better playing skills.
But the 1-3 loss of Thailand (ranked 14th in the world) to South Korea (ranked 37th) on May 19th was what really surprised people. In the last 5 matches between these two teams, the Thai volleyball “long legs” easily defeated South Korea with a score of 3-0, but this time the unexpected victory belonged to the team from the land of Kim Chi.
In Korea’s 3-1 victory, main striker Sohwi Kang was the top scorer of the match (22 points), followed by captain Jeongah Park and Jiyun Jeong with 16 points each. On the Thai side, main striker Chatchu-On Moksri scored 17 points, Wipawee Srithong (16 points) and Hattaya Bamrungsuk had 11 points.
Beautiful hitter, Lee Da Hyeon expressed her joy after the victory: “It took us 3 years to get this victory. We went through difficult times with many changes in the lineup. This victory is a great honor to defeat a strong opponent like Thailand”.
After 4 matches in VNL 2024, Korea with 1 win, 3 losses, 3 points ranked 14/16 participating teams, Thailand fell to the bottom of the table with all losses and no points.
On May 28, matches of VNL 2024 will continue to take place at 2 locations in Macau (China) and in the US.
